A student at the University of Tasmania has won the prestigious University of Queensland’s scholarship owl program.

A student at University of Tasman says he has been “thrilled and humbled” by the award.

“I’m really looking forward to the opportunity to help further my education at the university,” he said.

“My main focus is on the students, they’re the future of this institution.”

Mr Walshe said the scholarship program was “great” for young Tasmanians who had “great potential”.

“It’s fantastic for the future, the future generations,” he told the ABC.

“This is a great opportunity for people in Tasmania, it’s great for the university and the Tasmanian economy.”

We’re not really in the university business at the moment.

“So it’s really great for Tasmania to have this opportunity for young people to really get involved and really make a difference.”

He said he hoped the scholarship was a “wonderful learning experience” for future Tasmanians.

“They are the future,” he added.

“It can help them to get into the workforce and be able to do that and do well and get a good pay packet.”
